Install

  1. Open the downloaded zip file in your Downloads folder, if your browser hasn’t unzipped it already. You get the app “Backup Atlas”.
  2. Drag Backup Atlas into your Applications folder.
  3. Open Backup Atlas from Applications. The first time, macOS asks because the app comes from the internet; click Open. Backup Atlas is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple. It shows up as an icon in the menu bar.

Give it Full Disk Access

  1. macOS protects Time Machine’s settings and backups, so Backup Atlas needs Full Disk Access. Until it has it, the menu-bar window says “Backup Atlas can’t read Time Machine status”.
  2. Click Open Privacy Settings… there. System Settings opens at Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access, and Finder shows the app.
  3. Drag Backup Atlas from Finder into the list (or add it with the + button), then turn it on.

Enter your key

Without a key, the trial runs: everything for 14 days. After that, the menu-bar watchdog keeps watching your backups; browsing your changes needs a key.

If you got a key by email, click the link in it: Backup Atlas opens its License window with the key filled in and checked. Click Use License. Or copy the key from the email and paste it under License…, in the menu-bar window’s More menu or the app menu. The key is checked on your Mac, with no activation and no account.

Updates

Backup Atlas checks backupatlas.app for updates by itself. You can turn that off in the menu bar under More › Check for Updates Automatically. Your files, the history of your changes and the index are never sent.
